Nearly didn't make it !!!!

Well of all weekends to have a mishap with the laptop.  Yesterday I foolishly left a part drunk cuppa close to it and puppy came bounding through and you can guess what happened.  I was having palpitations ..... how would I communicate with my virtual world of lovely friends on this my 1st Blogiversary??

Following some drying out I was relieved that it still booted up but the inbuilt mouse was refusing to play.  A quick trip to Argos this morning to purchase a wire free mouse has done the trick and I'm ready to roll again.

On this day exactly one year ago I sat down and contemplated what I should write and wondered whether anyone would want to share my little piece of the planet.  I know there are a few of us who started at the same time with the same thoughts and some of us have since managed to meet in the real world.

I have been listening to the radio a lot this week whilst sitting at my sewing machine putting together the strings for Loft Creations challenge and the station I chose was Gold .... it is amazing that music can stir so many memories stored at the back of our minds.  I was a teenager in the 1970s and my very first music purchase with my pocket money was in 1972 when I bought this

Bit risque I know and I trembled at the thought of what my dad would say.  It was the era of skinheads, reggae and ska and I loved it (wasn't a skinhead myself BTW!)  I used to play it on one of these

A Dansette record player

I still have the old Dansette and LP in the loft along with all my other albums and singles and it is the only thing I have left to play them on.  How we have progressed in 40 years (is it really that long ago????) .... now at the click of a button we can download just about everything.  The only places to buy music in those days was Boots and a little music shop which originally started selling instruments and then progressed to singles and albums.  Off we would trot with our pennies and then you could listen on huge headphones before you purchased.

On this my first blogiversary I am having this giveaway

A mix of handicraft items, some vintage and some new ..... a floral cross stitch that I made last year, some Cath Kidston Oilcloth already cut into bunting size flags, three pretty pink vintage dressing table cloths, one of my handmade heart hangers and a cute print by Faye Whittaker called My Pal ... a gorgeous study of a child and his dog.  I am going to pop them into a vintage look biscuit tin for the lovely winner and the draw shall be at this time next Sunday.

In return I would like to ask you to do a post about what your first album purchase was .... were you a teen of the 60s 70s 80s 90s ...... and will you admit to recording Top of the Pops off the radio at this time on a Sunday afternoon????  It would be lovely if you could place a link to my blog too.

Thank you all for such an enjoyable twelve months and may we all have many more xx

  1. Oh lala I too was a teenager in the 70's ...what a time, things I rememeber were taping the top 20 off the radio onto a reel to reel ...having an almost identical record player but in a fawny/beigey colour and if I remember correctly mine had no legs.....I used to go to a shop called Cowlings and buy a single after school....I had to have the top 20 even if I didn't like the actual record lol
The first LP I remember buying was ''This is Soul'' and I stll have it along with about 500 albums in the loft...none of my many singles lasted....think I gave most of them away...I still love LPs in peference to CDs but hey thats progress...:)

  3. I think I've still got the first album I bought as well! I've even got the records my Mum & Dad gave me to play on a little 'portable' record player that was in a suitcase. Pinky & Perky and Puff the Magic Dragon were my favourites, but as for pop...you'll have to wait for my blog post ;-) which I will link to yours.

Most albums were pressies though, so it was probably a TOTPs album from Woolies if I bought it myself LOL

  11. Congrats on the year's worth of blogs - here's to year number two! My first album was The Nutcracker Suite, I saved two shillings of my half-a-crown a week pocket money until I had the guinea(One pound one shilling) it cost, that was in about 1963 - my first pop album was the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper and I never looked back! My dad used to think we would somehow be 'corrupted' if we bought pop music. He tolerated Top of the Pops (BBC), but Ready,Steady Go (ITV) was definitely no go! By the time I was 16 I think he realised we would be all right!!

  13. Congratulations on your anniversary. The first album that I purchased was about 1973. I bought a Neil Diamond album. Boy, was I disappointed when I got home and realized that although it was Neil Diamond music it was someone else singing it. After that I was a much smarter record purchaser.

  14. Congratulations, a full year, wow, I only started my blog this month!

My purchases were in the 60's. First single was Dave Clarke Five - Glad All Over and the first album was The Beatles - Beatles for Sale. Eight Days a Week (from that album) is still my favorite Beatles' song.

  16. Yay Happy First Birthday to you xxx

My first album was actualy bought for me by my Dad. He worked all over the country and we only ever saw him at the weekends. One trip to London meant he bought back War of the Worlds double LP - unusual as I was about 8 at the time, (70's) but I still love it now, though I listen to my sons version on CD.

  17. Oooooh, I had a Dansette, it was even the same colour! You're not the first person to get coffee in their computer. Even though my hair's short now and I only have to wash and comb - I do find my trusty old hairdryer is perfect for such catastrophes!

  27. My mum had a dancette, but I think she binned it!! The first albumn I bought with my own money was Barry Manilow. I used to listen to radio Luxembourg under my pillow at night and "Mandy" was the record of the week - which meant it played on the hour and every hour - it broke my heart!! and I have loved the man ever since!!! The first LP I can remember pestering my mum and dad to but was one of those "Top of the Pops" albumns (that had pretend singers singing the songs!) It had Amerillo on it and I think Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep!!.

  28. Congratulations on your Blog Anniversary. My first record was Joe Cocker, 'with a little help from my friends' I bought it as a single I think in 1970 and played it on my portable record player (red box, white lid/handle) visiting anyone who would listen as I had no other records at that time.

  32. I can't remember the first album I bought but as far as first records are concerned, I wanted to buy Carole King's "It might as well rain until September" but the shop didn't stock it!

Instead I bought The Who's "My Generation"

    ReplyDelete
  33. Actually, Lala, I see that Carole King's record was 1962 and The Who's was 1965 so my memory is wonky!

  34. Happy Blogversary. And thank you for all the lovely comments you leave me. I loved your post... really takes me back. I remember going into Boots as well to choose records. And recording the top 40 on a Sunday afternoon onto a tape! Haha. As for my first album, I'm not sure I can remember that far back, though I have them all still. I think it was a disco dance album, with Beegee hits and Abba hits... a mish mash! I'm pleased to discover who John is... was wondering as I couldn't link to his/her blog.
Lovely collection for a giveaway. I'll link to you when I do my next post.

The first one I bought was Ride a White Swan by T Rex - I still know all the words to T Rex songs much to hubby's horror!! Can also remember ringing 160 from a callbox on a Sunday evening to see what the new number 1 was! And I can remember recording TOTP on my cassette recorder - good times! Sharon Peters XX

  40. Congratulations on your blogiversary. I'm trying to remember what my first album was it may have been Michael Jackson Off the wall. I still have mine and do play them now & again as my eldest daughter has decks. I'm an 80's teenager and most definately did tape off of the radio & sometimes top of the pops on tv, everyone in the room had to be quiet!
